Oh the tedium of Trump’s retorts to his accumulating criminal indictments. His tiresome, repetitive cries of, “Witch hunt,” his desperate attempts to portray himself both as victim and avenger, painting his legal pigeons coming home to roost as dangerous not only to him, but also to us, are getting old. How many more times must we endure his aggrieved “It’s a very sad day for our country?” Enough of this numbingly monotonous self-involved litany with nothing new or remotely factual added. Trump clearly is protesting too much, stirring up and feeding off the frenzy of his Maga sycophants. The rest of us must keep our wits about us. Trump’s rants are a trial, but of greater concern is the spineless abetting and appeasement of Republican politicians and presidential candidates who are still in the Trump thrall. Instead of supporting the Department of Justice, Republicans call its integrity into question. Witness DeSantis’ weak, ham handed “ham sandwich” analogy, and McCarthy’s revived, shrill pursuit of Hunter Biden. Yet nary a peep from Republicans about Jared Kushner’s cozy connections with Saudi Arabia’s Mohammed bin Salman, who sanctioned the murder of journalist Jamal Kashoggi. That is the true peril here. Trump agitates, the Republicans propagate, swallowing and endorsing Trump’s plans to subvert the Constitution, our freedoms, and democracy as we know it. We must keep our wits about us while these politicians are losing theirs. We still retain one vital resource against this encroaching Trump/Republican tyranny: our right to vote. Never has there been a time when this right, this freedom, this obligation, has been more important. If we don’t use it, we will lose it.
