FOMO: Florida Offspring Missing Out

Florida’s hysterically over-protective Stepford parents and the  politicians who cater to them are doing the greatest disservice to Florida’s youth. Children should be resilient in the face of guilt or discomfort.  Children should know how to think and to choose for themselves. The Florida parents and politicians who want to eliminate any curriculum that makes a student feel guilt or discomfort are undermining their children, sending the message that they believe their children are weak and fragile, incapable of learning from history that is uncomfortable or literature that is painful or saucy.  It is a vote of no confidence for Florida’s young people. These parents and politicians, instead of choosing challenging,  thought-provoking, and, yes, uncomfortable content, prefer the  unexacting; to smooth the way so life remains easy and uncomplicated. This is FOMO at its worst: Florida Offspring Missing Out. These children, never facing guilt or discomfort, never learning about and facing adversity, will not be challenged, will not grow. Maybe that’s the ultimate plan? A generation that has never been questioned, so that they will never question? That is not protection. That is insult… or the realization of a threat: young, open minds.  DeSantis has made this “protection” of children a rallying cry, removing  pedagogical tools that foster critical thinking, resilience, and grit from school curricula, hoping that these young people will live down to their parents’ expectations and never recognize this systematic campaign to demonize and block their freedom to think, learn and question for themselves.
