A year’s long process to reform the Catholic Church closed with no hope that women would be given more equity. Pope Francis said that the moment for allowing ordination of women was “not ripe.” The gender wage gap widened significantly in 2023, with women earning 83 cents for every dollar men made. The Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade. Project 2025 will outlaw medication abortions. Justice Clarence Thomas has argued that the Supreme Court “should reconsider” its past ruling codifying rights to contraception access as well as precedents that assure Americans fundamental privacy, due process and equal protection rights.
Yet according to a Pew Research study, 3 out of 10 Republican men feel that women’s gains, despite the aforementioned roadblocks, come at their expense. They don’t care to share. In the face of such rotten, entrenched disrespect and outright misogyny it is little wonder that there is such a groundswell of women supporting Kamala Harris for president. Pope Francis is mistaken. The moment is ripe for change. The moment is ripe for a woman in charge. The moment is ripe for Madam President.
