A Texas lawsuit seeks to halt the supply of mifepristone in ALL states, both where it is banned AND where it is legal. Why you gotta be like this? The Alliance for Hippocratic Medicine, an umbrella group of anti-abortion medical associations, is asking Texas judge (and Trump appointee) Matthew Kascmaryk to “protect women and girls” with this litigation. This ill-named Alliance speciously claims to practice “hippocratic” medicine, a promise to do no harm, while seeking to do the opposite; to deprive women of autonomy and control over their own bodies, subject to the whim of conservative politicians who seek to keep women down, to deprive them of choices and freedoms that men enjoy every hour of every day. What these anti-abortion activists refuse to accept is that mifepristone has been around for years, and is safe and (for the moment) LEGAL. Why you gotta be like this? The Alliance knows which judge to tap for their buck: Kacsmaryk served as deputy general counsel at the First Liberty Institute, a religious liberty legal group. He has since then (according to CNN) made Texas “a legal graveyard” for democratic policies of the Biden administration. Why you gotta be such a hater? Nevermind that the Kansas amendment to deny a woman’s right to abortion was voted down 59.15% to 41.84%. Nevermind that a recent Pew Research Center survey reported that 61% of adult Americans say abortion should be legal in most cases. The “Hippocratic” Alliance and Judge Kascmaryk are clearly out of step with most Americans. Here’s the thing: They don’t care. This isn’t about “do no harm.” This isn’t about majority rule. This is about control, about imposing a minority, conservative, religious-based regime on the population at large, with women, (especially poor women) in the cross-hairs. We are a country at risk with Trump-appointed conservative judges and justices signaling to their conservative compatriots to release the hounds, that they will listen, deaf to the cries of the rest of us. They want to be like this. They don’t care.
