Rozzi: will he nill he?

Everybody likes a good mystery and Pennsylvanians certainly have one in the guise of newly elected PA House Speaker Mark Rozzi. In this unfolding political page turner,  will he, nill he, be a left leaning champion for social justice or a right leaning get-over-it scoffer who isn’t? Will he be the pro- or ant(i)-tagonist? Rozzi’s nomination and election were a surprise, neatly thwarting left-leaning hopes that new ground could be broken by elevating a Black woman to the Speaker’s position. Rozzi has announced that he will caucus neither with the Democrats nor with the Republicans (which begs the question: what will he do with his time when his political colleagues are in their respective caucus meetings, go out for a coffee?). Republicans say Rozzi will change his party affiliation to Independent. Democrats insist he will remain a Democrat. To further thicken the plot, echoing some conservative Christian politicians, Rozzi declines interview requests, preferring to keep his cards close to his chest, answering to no one.  We know that Rozzi has been tireless in his laudable commitment to fight for victims of sexual abuse, especially those who were molested by priests in the Catholic Church. His determination to seek justice for these victims is unstinting, and is driven by his own personal experience as a victim of molestation. This was his traumatic experience, this is his truth. Is Rozzi, in his role as Speaker, able and willing to recognize and to fight as tirelessly for those whose truths, equally traumatic and pernicious, are not his own?  Will he fight for families whose truth is the despair and grief of losing a loved one to gun violence? Will he fight for students in the LGBTQ community whose truth is harassment and marginalization in schools? For women whose truth is the potential loss of freedom of autonomy over their own bodies? The truth of families in poverty who struggle to get food on the table? The truth of folks who yearn to drive, to go to the rec center and to  shop safely while Black and brown? The Rozzi  chapters have yet to be written, the mystery remains.  Rozzi has demonstrated a relentless drive to redress the damages of child molestation, a trauma that shaped him into much of the man he is today. It remains to be seen if he has the breadth of vision, the courage, compassion and heart to honor and fight for those whose truths are different but as traumatic as his own.

Say it ain't so, Joe!
