Travis County state judge Clifford Brown sentenced Daniel Perry to 25 years in prison for fatally shooting Garrett Foster, who was marching in a Black Lives Matter protest in July, 2020. Texas governor Greg Abbott has already vowed that he will pardon Daniel Perry. Donald Trump, in a Town Hall held in New Hampshire this month, when asked about the convicted January 6 riot protesters, stated that as president, he will be “inclined to pardon many of them.”
Pardon me? Where is the justice in that? What is the point of having a legal system in this country if political leaders treat it as a mild irritant that can be circumvented and undermined in the name of personal, conservative political statements and showboating? Abbott and Trump are just two examples of Republican conservatives who have no qualms gaming the system and subverting the law and the Constitution to obtain their political ends. Fired up by conservative Christian ardor, conservative Republican legislators across the country are changing voting laws in democratic strongholds to disenfranchise Democrat voters. They are vowing to impeach duly elected Democratic prosecutors and state judges. Conservative extremists are quick to censure a trans legislator and to expel uppity Black state lawmakers. You can bet that many of these Republican lawmakers ran on a ticket touting law and order, yet when that law and that order don’t suit their agenda, law is jettisoned so that they can foist their own order upon the rest of us. Abbott and Trump are merely the tip of this conniving and coercive conservative iceberg moving determinedly to subjugate any and all who do not conform to their minority white conservative ideals. We cannot take these inroads lightly. This conservative movement is antithetical to democracy. They know it. Hence their bastardizing of the legal system by any means necessary to maintain their white-knuckled, fear-ridden control. It is imperative that we who do not agree VOTE like our lives depend upon it. In the primaries. In the general election. We cannot let these conservative Republicans pave over our Constitution and put up their theocratic regime causing our individual rights and freedoms to be for naught.
