It's the guns

Country singers are praying for Nashville. Some are calling out their politicians for their unwillingness to enact sensible gun laws. That’s great. Did you pray for Uvalde? Did you pray for those killed at the Emanuel AME Church? For those in the Walmart in Virginia? Glad to see that the crisis of out-of- control gun violence has at last become your truth. You’re a little late coming to the party in your calls for sensible gun control laws, but no worries, there’s plenty of room, we welcome you to the cause.  Hope you keep up your anger and frustration. Maybe some conservative Christian white country voices will help move the needle as the brown and black voices could not. Peter Frampton fumes, “It IS the (expletive deleted)  guns.” Katie Couric laments, “When will it end?” Answer? Never. It will never end as long as the NRA has politicians in its generous pockets. NRA money trumps the safety of the lives of children and adults in the name of their  fanatical guns-for-all-no-matter-what interpretation of the Second Amendment. Maybe your voices will help turn the tide. Say it louder. It’s the guns. Assault weapons are overkill. Ban them. Give us and our kids a chance to live fully, happily and safely. Say it louder. It’s the guns.  Now that your voices have joined the chorus we might have a better chance of seeing a political change in tune. Maybe politicians will pull themselves out of the NRA’s thrall and listen and act to create sensible gun regulations that keep guns out of the hands of the angry, the aggrieved, the sick, and the crazy, that ban assault weapons that make it too easy to kill so many with little more than a twitch of a finger. Say it louder. It’s the guns. Protect our children, our neighbors, our teachers, our fellow parishioners, all of us  from this scourge.  Because the truth is… It’s. The. Guns.
