Recent and ongoing machinations and maneuvering by Republican Christian conservatives and their comfy supermajorities from school boards to state legislatures are showing disturbing parallels to the political and social reality described in George Orwell’s 1984. In 1984’s dystopian world, the social pyramid was led by Big Brother, the supreme power over the Inner Party, the Outer Party, and the Proles. War is peace, ignorance is strength, freedom is slavery. As we approach 2024, Christian conservatives are preparing their new improved version of this reality and the words to live by: Big Brother? Christian Conservatives, with a Trump- or DeSantis-like figurehead (any influential conservative politician will do). The Inner Party? MAGA. The Outer Party? Democrats, liberals, moderates, educated elites. The Proles? The poor, the Black, the brown. And in this newer version, a fourth rung on the social ladder, the lowest of the low, the most denigrated; the unperson. The slogans to live by? In 2024, guns are peace. The conservative answer to out-of-control gun violence across the country? The Second Amendment. More guns, more peace. In 2024, ignorance is to be cultivated. The conservative Republicans are attacking and controlling school and university curricula in a desire to discourage critical thinking and personal judgment in favor of propaganda filled programs that teach conservative Christian values. School boards are banning books. Florida governor DeSantis enacted legislation against anything deemed “woke” in Florida schools. In 2024 freedom a chimera. The only way to be free is to embrace MAGA and the conservative party. All others will be demonized and criminalized, all others will be declared “Woke” and anti-American. In 2024, conservatives create the unperson. Tennessee State House Republicans expelled Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, Black legislators, who dared protest in favor of gun control. They are unpersons. Montana House Republicans censured Representative Zooey Zephyr, a duly elected transgender legislator, physically barring her from the House floor. She is an unperson. In Wisconsin, where gerry-mandering is raised to a high art, Democrat Milwaukee County Circuit judge Janet Protasiewicz was elected to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. Republicans in the supermajority are already considering impeaching her. Soon to be an unperson. Georgia lawmakers created a panel that can remove or discipline duly elected district attorneys, giving the legislature the ability to remove those who stray from the conservative party line. Unpersons! While 1984 is a work of fiction, the threat posed to our society by these conservative Christian Republicans is real. They are usurpers who are already taking steps to dismantle our democracy in order to impose their conservative Christian theocracy. The Constitution be damned. We must take heed. We must vote while the voting is still good. Unless we say no, unless we fight back there is a very real risk that 2024 will be the new 1984.
